Privacy-preserving cohort exploration

MedCo is a federated system for privacy-preserving clinical cohort exploration across multiple hospital sites. It combines homomorphic encryption, secure multi-party computation, and differential privacy to allow researchers to run aggregate queries on sensitive patient data without any site exposing individual records.

MedCo is the first operational system that makes sensitive medical-data available for research in a simple, privacy-conscious and secure way. It enables a consortium of clinical sites to collectively protect their data and to securely share them with investigators, without single points of failure.

MedCo applies advanced privacy and security techniques, such as:

Over the last 15 years, the Laboratory for Data Security has pioneered the areas of security and privacy in personalized health and mobile/wireless networks as well as tackled interpersonal privacy issues. On the first topic, they collaborate extensively with hospitals. Their core competencies are in applied cryptography, data protection techniques such as differential privacy, and wireless networking. Their research is funded by the Strategic Focus Area “Personalized Health and Related Technologies” of the ETH Domain, the Swiss Data Science Center and the Swiss National Science Foundation.
